Mediterranean Waters Reached the Highest Temperature of Its History

Mediterranean waters reached their highest temperature ever recorded last Monday, amid heatwaves sweeping across Europe. The European Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) confirmed that the average Sea Surface Temperature (SST) for the Mediterranean was 28.4C on Monday. The previous record was set on 23 August 2003 at 28.25C. According to Copernicus, the global sea surface temperature climbed to unprecedented high levels in June, triggering localised marine heatwaves across the planet, including the United Kingdom and Ireland: The Baltic Sea, the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean off New Zealand and the western Indian Ocean waters near Madagascar warmed unprecedentedly.
