Maldives Plays its Card Before Climate Migration
Rising sea levels due to global warming and climate change threaten the Maldives with extinction. The Indian Ocean archipelago is already running out of drinking water. However, the country's new president, Mohammed Muizzi, announced that contrary to the warnings of the former president, he canceled the relocation plans of the citizens. Instead, Muizzu promised to protect the country from rising sea levels through ambitious land reclamation and the construction of higher islands. Environmental and human rights groups warned that this could further increase the risk of flooding.
