Crawford Lake Chosen to Represent the Beginning of the Anthropocene
A region in Canada selected by scientists represents the beginning of the Earth's Anthropocene epoch. The region marks the end of an 11,700-year period in which human civilisation flourished and the global environment remained stable, and the beginning of a new era dominated by human activity. This region is a sinkhole lake in Canada. From plutonium to hydrogen bomb test particles to traces of fossil fuels burned around the world, Lake Crawford is home to the traces of humanity's enormous impact on the planet in the 1950s and beyond. If the site is confirmed by scientists studying the geological time scale, the declaration of our new geological era as the Anthropocene will be made official in August 2024.
