Black Sea Warming Starts to Reach Deeper

The second sea voyage covering the summer period of the multinational project titled "Research and Innovation for Blue Growth Development in Resilient Ecosystems in the Black Sea" (BRIDGE-BS), which was implemented to observe the effects of climate change in the Black Sea under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Yücel and Prof. Dr. Barış Salihoğlu, Director of Middle East Technical University (METU) Institute of Marine Sciences, was carried out in June. The expedition, which was carried out with METU Bilim-2 Ship, lasted 20 days in the project supported by the Horizon Europe Programme, to which Türkiye contributes together with EU countries and whose Turkish leg is carried out by TÜBİTAK. In the data obtained during the expedition, it was determined that the cold interlayer specific to the Black Sea was above the old temperatures and that the temperature in this interlayer, which should be 7 degrees or below, did not fall below 8 degrees. According to the findings, there is a warming of 1.5-2 degrees in the sea surface temperatures and 1 degree in the cold intermediate layer deeper in the sea.
