Spain Canary Islands Forest Fire
Efforts to extinguish the forest fire that started on the evening of 15 August in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands of Spain, continue. Authorities stated that they fought against a very strong fire yesterday (17 August). Thousands of people were evacuated from the area where the fire was effective, while island residents in the fire zone were urged not to leave their homes due to air pollution caused by smoke. According to the information provided by the police, at least 3,200 hectares of land was burnt down by Thursday evening. In addition to 400 firefighters, soldiers from Spain's search and rescue team, the Military Emergency Unit (UME), 17 firefighting aircraft and helicopters participated in the firefighting efforts.
