Amazon Summit Ended
The Amazon Summit in Belem, Brazil, ended on 9 August with a roadmap to protect tropical rainforests, which was welcomed as an important step against climate change. Climate and ecological circles criticised the lack of concrete commitments to end deforestation in the final agreement. "It is crucial that the leaders of the countries of the region listen to the science and understand the call of the community," the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) group said in a statement: The Amazon is in danger and we don't have much time to act. However, WWF regrets that the eight Amazonian countries have not been able to reach common ground as a front to end deforestation in the region."
