The expert team of the Marine Mammal Research Association (DMAD), which works to raise scientific and public awareness about the critical habitats of cetaceans and the problems they face, imaged sperm whales off Kaş and Fethiye. Efecan İştipliler from the research team stated that there are three species of whales in the seas of Türkiye: sperm whales, beaked whales and long whales, and said that according to the World Union for Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN) red list data, the population estimate for sperm whales living in the Mediterranean is between 250 and 2,500, and the Mediterranean population is classified as 'endangered'.
