Happy Birthday, Jonathan The Turtle

The world's oldest living land animal, a giant Seychelles tortoise named Jonathan, celebrated his 191st birthday. Jonathan's estimated birth year is 1832, which means that he was born before many innovations had been invented, such as the postage stamp, the telephone and photography, the light bulb, the pistol-powered zeppelin and the modern bicycle. Jonathan the Turtle lived through the US Civil War, most of Queen Victoria's reign, the rise and fall of the Soviet Union and two world wars. The giant tortoise, who has lived on the island of Saint Helena since 1882, also had a 26-year relationship with his boyfriend. Jonathan is not only the world's oldest living land animal, but also the oldest "chelonian" (a reptile species that includes turtles, tortoises and water turtles) species ever recorded.
