Extreme Heat and Food Problem Caused Mass Death of Seagulls
Thousands of seagulls living in Lake Van died. This mass death of seagulls, which feed on the pearl mullet fish living in the lake, is explained by reasons such as temperatures and food problems. Pearl mullet fish completed its journey to reproduce early this year due to drought and reproduced less than in previous years due to excessive water loss. Gulls that feed on the Pearl Mullet fish, an endemic species living in Lake Van, use places such as Adır and Çarpanak Island in the lake as incubation areas every year. The gulls that breed here start to migrate at the beginning of September after raising their young. This year, the gulls about to migrate started to die en masse. These deaths, which are expressed in thousands in the region on the coast of Adır Island, have caused anxiety.
