The World is Far From Its Commitment to End Deforestation

The world is moving too slowly to fulfill its pledge to end deforestation by 2030, according to a new report. At the 2021 United Nations Climate Summit in Glasgow, more than 140 countries representing the vast majority of the world's forested areas pledged to halt and reverse forest loss and forest degradation within a decade. In 2022, deforestation worldwide increased by 4 percent compared to 2021, with nearly 66,000 square kilometers of forested land destroyed. This means the world is 21 percent away from the goal of ending deforestation by 2030.
