Peru: Lost More Than Half Its Glaciers in 50 Years
Peru has lost 56 percent of its tropical glaciers in the last 50 years due to climate change, according to a new government inventory. Scientists from the National Institute of Glacier and Mountain Ecosystems (Inaigem) said the country harbors 68 percent of the world's tropical glaciers, and rising temperatures have led to the formation of new mountain lagoons that melt and overflow, risking flooding. The report used satellite imagery until 2020. It found that 2,084 glaciers had shrunk to 1,50 square kilometers (405 square miles) in 2020, compared with 2,399 square kilometers of ice and snow in 1962. In the Ancash region, where many glaciers have disappeared, they lost almost 6 percent of their high mountain glaciers in four years, from 2016 to 2020, institute director Beatriz Fuentealba told Reuters.
