Extreme Weather Events Cause $16 Million Losses Per Hour

Scientists have revealed that extreme weather events caused by the climate crisis in the last 20 years have cost $16 million per hour. According to the latest data, the cost of extreme weather events caused by climate change will reach 280 billion dollars in 2022. Researchers created the estimates by combining data on how much global warming has exacerbated extreme weather events with economic data on losses. According to the study published in the journal Nature Communications, two-thirds of the damage costs are accounted for by loss of life and one-third by loss of property. The study shows that the number of people affected by extreme weather events caused by the climate crisis has reached 1.2 billion in two decades. These estimates are much higher than those derived from computer models based on changes in average global temperature.
