EU to Phase Out Fossil Fuels For Heating by 2040
After months of negotiations, MEPs, national governments and the European Commission have signed an agreement for the union's new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). Accordingly, EU countries have agreed to phase out fossil fuel heating by 2040. From 2025, there will be no financial support for boilers. The agreed text contains far-reaching provisions on the phasing out of fossil fuels in home heating. The new Directive will require all new buildings in the EU, including newly built homes, to be 'Zero Emission Buildings' from 2030. New buildings must have zero carbon emissions from fossil fuels. This will apply to public buildings from 1 January 2028.
