406,172 Hectares of Forest Area Actually Lost Forest Ecosystem Characteristics in 11 Years

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Republic, the Turkish Foresters Association (TOD) organized a panel discussion titled "There is Worse than Fire: Allocation of Forests for Non-Forestry Uses". In the panel, it was stated that 811 thousand hectares of forest areas were allocated for non-forestry purposes until 2023. Although it is very difficult to transform forest ecosystems into forest ecosystems again, these areas are still included in forest statistics on paper, even though it is very difficult to transform forest ecosystems into forest ecosystems again, where facilities such as airports, roads, university campuses, cemeteries, prisons, hotels, golf courses, mining sites, hydroelectric power plants, thermal power plants, etc. are built in their place. According to the data presented by the speakers, between 2012 and 2022, a total of 406,172 hectares of forest areas actually lost their forest ecosystem status. Every year, about four times the area of forest damaged by fires is lost due to permits granted for non-forestry purposes.
